Julien Heintz

A graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris (2024) and 2026 laureate of the Prix de Fondation Bredin Prat, Julien Heintz focuses on 20th century archival documentary footage, which he uses as a point of departure to translate blurred flickering images of historical events into layered oil paintings of oftentimes forgotten, anonymous people. Using hand ground pigments mixed with marble powder, Heintz creates dense, atmospheric surfaces where gures appear like unstable memories at the edge of recognition. His subjects span from Cold War nuclear tests to Walter Freeman’s medical patients, shifting the archive away from documentation toward the face as a suspended, universal trace.

For this year’s Gallery Weekend in Berlin, CFA opened his debut solo exhibiton Nouveaux Tableaux (2026). His work has been shown in L’anonyme comme medium (2024) at pal project, Paris; Degré zéro (2022) and Crush (2022) at Beaux-Arts de Paris, and Spectres of Memory (2022) and Six Painters (2020), Koppel Project, London.
