Chicks On Speed (COS) are Melissa Logan (from New York), Kiki Moorse (from Munich) and Alex Murray-Leslie (from Bowral, Australia). They’re also a band, a clothing label, a website, a record label, a design team and a twenty-first-century phenomenon.
The girls met while running a drinking den at art school in Munich. They moved to Berlin, where low rents are attracting unprecedented numbers of young creatives. There they reinvented themselves as Chicks On Speed, an all-girl collective, who, while relishing their amateur status in various creative fields, are fearlessly “putting it out there”.
From providing a raunchy, cover-version soundtrack to parties and gigs, to customising visitors clothing at exhibitions (Foundation Cartier) to posing with Karl Lagerfeld for the cover of their latest album, the Chicks have invaded the worlds of fashion and music with their endearing D-I-Y aesthetic and good-time vibe. Now they’re being taken seriously by these mega-industries; COS are both muse and rebel!
This, their first publication, aims to capture that sense of freedom and spontaneity. The book is divided into periods of their lives: ‘Fake Band’, ‘Pressing the Press’, ‘Sell Out’, ‘Temporary Spaces’, ‘Modifidas’ (imaginary products), ‘We Don’t Play Guitars’, ‘Class War’, ‘Consuming Passion’ and ‘Heaven or Hell or Just The End’. Die-cut, over-printed and assembled from many different stocks, this book approximates a COS scrapbook, full of press-clippings, personal mementos and ideas, printed ephemera and free COS merchandise.
